I always battling myself whether to write my own niche site codes (I am a php expert) or use one of those freely available like wordpress or drupal. The problem with wordpress, to make small changes (like the year thing above) is rather easy. But if you require major changes, try looking at the codes and god forbid.. it is a jungle of spaghetti. I decided to write my own codes for small niches websites. The result.... it took me more than 2 years... and still no result. If I decided to stick to the wordpress code and satisfied with whatever available... my site now could have been more than 2 years old! And I could have earn more than John Chow! This is the best thing about using open source php. you can see the codes and modify yourself.
