We have had a lot of positive feedback for our “ Redirecting a WordPress.com Blog” document, and a common issue is redirection not working due to the permalinks of the new blog not being set to the style used by WordPress.com.

This was first raised by Eric P and he helped out by writing his own execllent post on redirecting a WordPress.com blog - thanks Eric.

With our PDF document on moving a WordPress.com blog to your own self hosted blog proving popular, we have updated it to include a section on setting the permalinks of your new blog, so that all the necessary information is in the one place.

Thanks again to all the excellent feedback we have received.

Wish I had seen this last year, when I bought my domain and migrated off of WP.com…

it’s actually not necessary to maintain the same permalink structure. The permalink redirect plugin can sort out the correct url, observe: http://sunburntkamel.wordpress.com/2007/05/15/importing-a-wordpresscom-blog-into-an-existing-blog/

beware of using it in combination with wp-super-cache, though, as it tends to disable such behaviour

I did this this morning, using the PDF. I couldn’t believe how easy and fast it was.

    But wait.

I can’t get to the wordpress.org login screen. It’s redirecting me to my wordpress.com login. I can’t even begin to figure out what went wrong, but if I can’t get to the right wp-admin login, suddenly moving to godaddy seems kind of pointless.

    Please help?

@maria - I suspect that this is either:

    1) A timing issue, as sometimes it can take minutes or hours for DNS changes to propagate fully, or

    2) You need to ensure that your Go Daddy domain name no longer uses WordPress.com’s nameservers. This is the very last step in the document.

    Thanks, mad.

    It was issue #1.

After driving myself crazy for a few hours, I finally stepped away from the computer. I went back to it later and lo and behold, everything was perfect.

I have made a note to myself for the future that these things do not happen instantly.

I’m even more impressed with the PDF now. Thanks for sharing such great work.
